The Flying Fish or the family of Exocoetidae in science is the collection of over 64 species which are grouped together in nine genera. As the name goes, the members of this family have the ability to make powerful leaps out of the sea or river, wherever they are into air, with their long fins which are wing-like, allow them for a gliding flight for over quite considerable distances above the surface of the water. Science explains these fishes having this powerful ability due to the fact that this ability allows them to escape the wrath of predators.
This type of fish can be found all over the world in all of the oceans, however the two places where they can be particularly found are waters having tropical or a warm subtropical climate. The Flying fish has pectoral fins as their most prominent feature, which are quite larger than any other kind of fish found elsewhere, enabling them to hide from predators. These fishes are capable of extended flights which may last to around 50 meters.
A flying fish makes its tail move up to around 70 times/sec which allow it to glide upwards out of the water, then the fish spreads the spectral fins, tilting them in the process to provide lift and at the end fold the pectoral fins to re-enter the sea if it wants or drop the tail to push against the water for pushing it for another glide. For its flight, the wing has been made in such as shape that it is comparable to a wing of the bird. If you ever get a chance to see it, do not miss it at any costs.
